WHAT CAUSES CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM DISORDERS?
Depression seems to be caused by low
levels of neurotransmitters that involve norepinephrine and serotonin
circuits in the brain.
Neurons are the building blocks of the
brain. Neurons, the nerve cells that are the major constituent of the
brain, are in many ways the most remarkable cells in all of biology.
The basic job of the neuron is to process information and convey it
to other neurons in the brain and ultimately, to generate behavior
and experience. Neurons talk to each other by releasing certain
chemical molecules, the chemical messengers, or neurotransmitters, at
the synapses. When these neurotransmitters are imbalanced or low,
especially serotonin (a specific neurotransmitter), depression
occurs.
Serotonin, in particular, has been the
neurotransmitter subjected to intense research for the past 25 years.
